Competence and Technical Ability – Skills Required To Excel In Your Career

Written By Unknown on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 | 12:46 PM

  • General: (plural competences) cluster of related abilities, commitments, knowledge, and skills that enable a person (or an organization) to act effectively in a job or situation. In comparison to ‘competency’ (plural competencies) which refers to a cluster of abilities relating to excellence in a specific activity, competence indicates sufficiency (state of being ‘good enough’) of knowledge and skills that enable one to act in a wide variety of situations. Because each level of responsibility has its own requirements, competence can occur in any period of a person’s life or at any stage of his or her career.
Competence or Technical Ability is considered a basic skill. Can you operate a computer? Can you drive a truck? Can you use the phone? Can you manage people? At a minimum, you are what you say you are. Competence with varying degrees of the other 7 skills is what makes you an outstanding employee or the proverbial unemployable. If you are creating or updating a resume, list Competence as one of your headings. You should be able to write clear examples of how you demonstrated this skill for your employer. Each explanation should detail an achievement or success story for all stakeholders; your employer, colleagues, customers, and yourself. Here are some suggestions on enhancing your Competence and Technical Ability:
  • You should be open-minded and have the maturity to receive very critical feedback from any source.
  • Get a mentor; somebody that is in life (career) where you want to be. Ask them for honest feedback.
  • Ask your boss how you rate against other peers.
  • Ask your boss for more challenging opportunities or work side-by-side with a colleague that has a higher competence level than yourself.
  • Locate online or offline assessments/tests, and then use 2 to see where you rate against the masses.
Once you identify your level of competence or technical ability, you can research training, education programs, and self-help books that will assist you in your career development.
